Matiang'i Goes Out Gun Blazing Over Dreaded Mombasa Gang

On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, sent a stern warning to dreaded Mombasa gang, Wakali Kwanza, who terrorised Bamburi earlier this week, randomly slashing and injuring almost 15 people.

Matiang’i declared a personal feud with the gang when he spoke in Nyeri County, on Thursday, during a meeting with leaders and top security officers from the area.

“I want to assure the people of Kenya that we are prepared to deal with that. In fact, I am going to spend a good part of my time next week in the Coast region because of these issues.

“We are going to apply unprecedented pressure on these groups. We will not play around with the lives of our people,” the powerful CS declared.

The minister stated that the outlawed groups were being assembled by politicians.

Under the guise of political mobilisation, we are seeing possible signs of attempts or efforts to revive or recreate criminal gangs. Not just here in the Central part of the country, but the rest of Kenya. What is going on in the Coast region is a feature of that,” Matiang’i revealed.

Matiang’i further disclosed that the security department had received intelligence that a section of youth from Nyeri, who crossed the border into Somalia, had returned to the Central Kenya region, and were assembling colleagues to engage in planning terror activities.

We are aware, and we are tracing some places here. I urge the chiefs and assistant chiefs to identify families whose children crossed the northern Kenya border. Upon mapping those families out, they should share that information with us,” he urged.

Police officers on Monday confirmed the arrest of three suspects believed to be part of the gang.

Kisauni police boss, Julius Kiragu, noted that the three were arrested on suspicion of having been involved in the skirmishes.

The 10-man gang roamed through the streets of hacking everyone and anyone on sight using the machetes they were carrying.
