Mzee Moi's Ex-Assistant Minister Dies

The family of former Foreign Affairs Assistant Minister, Dr Hezron Manduku, has confirmed his passing on at Nairobi Hospital.

The Standard reported that according to the family, Dr Manduku passed on Saturday at around 9 pm, after a long illness.

He served as Nyaribari Masaba MP for two terms and was first elected to parliament in 1992, after edging out Prof Sam Ongeri.

The late was then appointed by retired President Daniel Moi as an assistant minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1997, he lost to Ongeri before recapturing the seat in 2002.

Dr Manduku is a medical doctor who has previously worked at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kakamega Hospital, Meru among others.

During his time in 1975, he established his private hospital in Kisii; Hema Hospital.

The 79-year-old Medical Surgeon has left behind a widow and children including Dr Robert Manduku who resigned from Kisii County Government to manage the family hospital.

He went through Nyaturago Primary School, Gesusu Intermediate School and later studied medicine at the People's Friendship University of Russia between 1964 and 1969.

The late assistant minister was famous for a mitumba shirt he wore for more than 10 years.

In a previous interview with The Nairobian, Manduku admitted that he bought the shirt in 2003, days after recapturing his seat.

By the time he did the interview in 2017, Dr Manduku told reporters that he was not ready to let go his favourite shirt.

“This shirt is still in good condition and I wear it regularly, at times on a weekly basis. In fact, it is one of my favourite shirts. I have worn it for close to 15 years now and I am not about to let go of it,” he told the local newspaper.
