City Lawmaker Arrested After Hanging Out With Matiang'i

UPDATEAhmed Salama was later released by a Mombasa court citing insufficient evidence to keep him detained in police custody.

A member of the Mombasa County Assembly was, on Monday, arrested just a day after hanging out with Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i.

According to a report by Daily Nation, Bofu Ward Representative Ahmed Salama was arrested in connection with drug trafficking.

Salama was nabbed while in Likoni after the CS ordered an operation targeting politicians and businessmen who were suspected to be behind drugs trade in the country.

The MCA was among the leaders who attended a meeting convened by the CS dubbed Uhuru na Kazi that took place in Mombasa.

After the meeting, some 18 people were arrested.

Salama was reportedly taken to Likoni Police Station where he recorded a statement before taking police to his house.

“He took the officers to all his houses after recording the statement. He was later taken to the police headquarters,” the publication quoted a police officer.

Confirming the arrest, Mombasa Police Commander Johnston Ipara disclosed that Salama was arrested in connection with drug trafficking and would be arraigned in court on Tuesday morning.

This comes shortly after police narrowed down and arrested Officer in Charge of Lamu Police Station (OCS) for facilitating the release of a suspected drug trafficker.

The OCS, Shadrack Mumo, was arrested alongside three other junior officers—all based at Faza Island.

According to the Inspector General of Police (IG), Hillary Mutyambai, the suspect, who was allegedly found with Cannabis Sativa, had been arrested late Sunday by a team of officers from the Border Patrol Unit.
