Senate Runs to Raila After Governor Threatens to Dissolve County

A Senate committee chaired by Senator John Kinyua, on Wednesday, turned to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to mediate talks between Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja and his MCAs.

Samboja had earlier threatened to dissolve the county after failing to approve the county's budget after the MCAs cut the executive’s allocations in favour of the development sector.

Raila, together with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula, are expected to help mediate the deteriorating relationship.

According to a report by K24 TV, the committee also reached out to the Inter-government Relations Technical Committee for ways to deal with the standoff.

“We want the IGRTC to be involved so that we can engage all of them. This is a matter that involves parties. Therefore, we are also engaging the ODM party leader because majority of the MCAs are from ODM.

“We are involving the party leader in these discussions so that we have a solution,” argued Kinyua.

The governor grew so serious with his threat that he kickstarted a drive to collect signatures to petition President Uhuru Kenyatta for the dissolution of the county.

It all commenced in June when the MCAs allocated their wards Ksh41.5 million each.

It is the governor's refusal to allocate that escalated the row to the heights it has achieved, Samboja also declined to approve the allocation of Ksh833 million on development.
