Rowdy Youths Block Nairobi Highway

There was drama as angry youth were on Thursday, reported to have caused havoc on a highway in Nairobi, making it impassable.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the youth blocked a section of the Thika super highway's Nothern bypass.

According to a source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, the youth blocked the road using stones and went as far as lighting fires.

Traffic was disrupted at Northern bypass' Marurui area as the youths engaged police in running battles.

"They were protesting the 'reclaiming' of the only playground they have been using for decades," said Eddy Mwanza, a source on the ground at the time.

In June, a section of Thika Superhighway was also blocked after angry residents lit up some fires on it.

According to witnesses, the huge snarl-up was experienced since the morning after a car burst into flames on the highway before the protesters took over a while later.

Police were forced to intervene and engage with the small traders from the Roysambu-Kasarani area who had camped on the highway.

Confirming the incident, Kasarani OCS Peter Kimani told Kenyans.co.ke that the traders were protesting a move by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to demolish their Kiosks that had encroached the road reserves.
