3 Groups of People Exempted From Matiang'i's Census Curfew

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, came out to announce the 3 classes of personnel that would be allowed to move freely on the night of the census.

During his live press conference held at Harambee House, on Thursday, the CS announced that only Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) employees, security personnel and independent monitors, would be granted freedom to move around on the census.

"So, there are only 3 types of people who we will have out there on Saturday and Sunday evening. They will either be KNBS officials, security officers and Monitors who must carry the official identification documents," he announced.

The interior CS made it clear that he had deployed sufficient security personnel, to ensure that any individuals with ill-motives would be dealt with accordingly.

He went on to announce that for security purposes, any individuals interested in monitoring the exercise had until 6 pm on August 23, 2019, to process their identification documents in the respective counties.

"Our county commissioners across all the 47 counties are issuing accreditation documents to observers or monitors of the census exercise," he asserted.

Matiang'i also apologized for the inconvenience caused, following his orders that all bars and entertainment spots should be closed by 5 pm over the weekend.

"Sorry for the inconvenience, but please bear in mind that this exercise only happens once in 10 years," he remarked.

He jokingly stated that any individual who wasn't satisfied after drinking beer for three whole hours between 2 pm and 5 pm, had serious issues.

Matiang'i also advised the media to desist from pushing out alarming titles, in reference to some publications that had published titles which implied that he had banned drinking in Kenya.

"Some of you have been running headlines that would make someone think that the world was going to end over the weekend," he jokingly remarked.

The census exercise is set to kick off on Saturday and run for a period of one week.
