Babu Owino Comes Clean on Recently Abusing Drugs

Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, has admitted to using bhang (marijuana), even as it remains a banned substance in Kenya.

In an exclusive interview with The Standard, the youthful MP revealed that the last time he indulged in the narcotic substance was two months ago, but only took it in small quantities.

"The amount I used was very little just to kill any cancerous cells that may be coming up in my body," he stated.

The former University of Nairobi student leader explained that marijuana is well known for its medicinal values, including killing cancer cells, adding that it also improves manpower.

Babu, who was recently tasked with overseeing the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth's Bill on legalization of the drug, noted that he only supports the usage of bhang for medicinal purposes and not for recreational use.

This is not the first time there have been reports of an MP using bhang.

Early in 2019, Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, claimed that he used to smoke marijuana in a toilet in Parliament, alongside Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, when they were still MPs.

Appearing on JKLive, Sonko made the shocking confession stating that he had since stopped smoking the illegal substance.

“I think he (Waititu) used to smoke a lot of bhang when he was an MP. I’m a witness to this.  We used to go to a certain toilet there. We used to smoke a lot of bhang with this guy. In fact, he was hiding bhang in the socks. I stopped smoking but he (Waititu) still smokes,” Sonko claimed.

Waititu, however, denied the allegations, citing that “In fact, if such utterances came from someone else, I could have gone to court over defamation. But since they came from Sonko, I know him. I know why he said it [and] I also don’t take him seriously,” the Kiambu county boss responded.
