Naivas Billionaire Dies in Nairobi

Naivas Supermarkets Chairman Simon Gashwe Mukuha passed on on Monday evening while receiving treatment.

He had been admitted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi after suffering a stroke last week. 

Naivas supermarket Chief Operations Officer Willy Kimani reported that “Mukuha has passed on this (Monday, 26 August 2019) evening at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he was undergoing treatment after suffering a heart attack.”

Simon is the son of the founder of the supermarket chain Peter Mukuha Kago and held 25 per cent ownership of the retail outlet. 

His brother, David Kimani Mukuha, also owns a stake 25 per cent.

The growth of Naivas has been tremendous under the stewardship of Simon Gashwe and David Kimani who acts as the managing director of the retailer that has seen it expand its branch network across the country.

On the same day, women rights activist, Kamla Sikand, passed on.

President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of condolence and encouragement to the family, relatives and friends of one of Kenya’s foremost women rights defender.

The president described the late Sikand as a bold, brave and astute leader.

He noted the late Sikand was deeply involved in the making of Kenya’s 2010 constitution having been a constitutional delegate at Bomas of Kenya.

As a civil rights defender and an anti-corruption crusader, she played a crucial role as a member of the National Anti-Corruption Steering Committee, travelling across the country enlightening Kenyans on the evils of corruption.

“As a nation, we have lost a great leader, a champion for women rights and a crusader of a corruption-free society. She was among the few celebrated women leaders who laid the foundation for women empowerment and equality in our society,” the president's statement read.
