NEMA Closes Daima Yoghurt Factory

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has closed the Sameer Imara Daima yoghurt factory in Industrial Area indefinitely.

The closure was due to the company's alleged discharging untreated effluent into Nairobi Sewer, resulting in the pollution of the Nairobi River.

The Cooperation Manager was also arrested during the closure and is expected to be arraigned in court over failing to ensure that the proper standards were adhered to during the dumping of waste.

The crackdown is attributed to the recent expose aired by NTV Kenya over pollution in Nairobi, Kenya.

CEO and Operations Manager of Synresins, a chemical firm in Industrial Area was also arrested and the factory closed for discharging hazardous waste direct into sewer and environment.

They are set to be arraigned in court tomorrow.

"Nema has identified 102 discharge points along Nairobi River. Out of inspections conducted, 50% of firms have complied. Ongoing inspections are to ensure remaining have complied as per Water Quality Regulation 2006 or be shut & prosecuted," Ag. DG Mamo B. Mamo Said.

Early yesterday, the Director-General of NEMA closed down the Kamongo Waste Paper recycling factory for failing to comply with environmental regulations & not having necessary licenses.

4 other factories namely Apex Coating EA, Thorlite Kenya, Modern Lithography, Kamongo Paper Ltd were also closed down for discharging effluent that doesn't meet water quality standards and has no functioning pre-treatment plant.

The Environmental body has promised to spread the exercise to any other companies flouting the standards agreed upon by the environment watchdog.
