Day Uhuru's CBD Stunt Had Security Trailing Matatu Driver

President Uhuru Kenyatta once caused panic within his security detail as they had to hatch a plan on how to protect him after he pulled a stunt within Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).

In November 2014, Uhuru abandoned his state official motorcade and boarded a matatu from State House to Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) so as to launch the cashless My1963 card.

Using the card, Uhuru paid only Ksh 30 as fare.

That day, the presidential escort vehicles were forced to sandwich the bus so as to protect the Uhuru.

The move surprised Kenyans, including matatu owners, drivers and touts who were astounded to see the matatu carrying the president, edged between security vehicles and being escorted to KICC.

Those who accompanied the president and enjoyed state protection were the late Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, James Macharia who was then the Transport Cabinet Secretary and Uhuru's nephew, Jomo Gecaga.

The cashless system was unveiled to assist commuters to pay fare electronically, rather than cash.

It was hoped that the system would revolutionize the public transport industry and also ensure accountability in the sector. However, the project wasn't as successful as expected.

In June 2019, Uhuru broke security protocol and drove off with Orange Democratic Movement leader, Raila Odinga, to Kisumu Yacht Club.

Nation reported that the president abandoned most of his bodyguards at 6 pm and used a small motorcade to get to the club which is located on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Raila and Uhuru were later joined by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i
