Police Shoot Man Dead After Lobbing Grenade at Them

Police in Nyali, Mombasa county, on Thursday, gunned down a suspected armed robber.

The event took place at Bombolulu Sports area, where law enforcers had gone to raid the suspect's house.

According to Nyali police boss, Simon Thirikwa, the cops had ordered the robber, Mohamed Hamasa, alias Moha to surrender but he declined to cooperate.

Instead, he hurled a suspected grenade at the officers, who in turn opened fire, killing him instantly, K24 TV reports.

Upon ransacking the 45-year old's house, the law enforcers recovered police uniform, boots and two smartphones, a Samsung and a Viwa.

Materials allegedly used in making the said improvised explosive device were also seized.

Reports have it that Hamasa was a member of a gang that shot an M-Pesa agent at a Naivas store in Nyali, on June 25, 2019.

The gang is reported to have made away with Ksh 600, 000 from the agent’s shop.

Nyali police boss, Thirikwa, said the suspected explosives will be tested to ascertain their nature.

The suspect’s body was taken to Coast Provincial General Hospital morgue.

Thirikwa further disclosed that Hamasa who had stayed in Bombululu for about 20 years, had been in the past charged with various criminal offences.
