Raila's Words on Uhuru's Project That Have Come Back to Haunt Him

A Facebook post by ODM leader Raila Odinga slamming the Jubilee government for failing to deliver on key projects in 2017 now portrays the incredible change in his disposition since the 'handshake'.

While stating that the administration was the most corrupt in the history of Kenya, the former prime minister outrightly accused President Uhuru Kenyatta's government of lying to its own citizens.

"The sports facilities they promised are nowhere to be seen. They lied to the youth.

They have not delivered on food security and bringing down the cost of living. The Galana-Kulalu mega irrigation project is turning out to be another white elephant. Instead, they raised taxes on essential goods, they lied," a post on his page dated January 5, 2016 reads.

On Friday 29, 2019, Raila visited the Galana-Kulalu project that the government is estimated to have poured over Ksh 7 billion in, downplaying his earlier sentiments that the project was a white elephant.

"We have come here to witness for ourselves. We were hearing reports that funds for the project have been embezzled but we have witnessed something good," Raila said in a statement.

The project was among Uhuru's flagship projects when he assumed office and ever since its launch, it has been riddled with scandals including the incredible payment of Ksh 588 million towards the clearance of the site's bushes.

On February 2019,  it was reported that an Israeli firm, which was tasked with its construction, packed its bags and left, after reportedly pocketing Ksh7 billion.

However, the Israeli company, Green Arava chairman, Yavir Kedar, refuted the allegations that they left the grounds.

"We never left and we are still on the ground implementing the project, we have already spent Sh5.2 billion on the project," Kedar stated.
