It seems that as the times change, robbers also evolve in their methods, a fact that can be ascertained by a senior employee at the Nation Media Group (NMG).
Last week, Senior NMG Manager, Francis Gathitwa Kago, lost about Ksh 700,000 in Nairobi's latest robbery tactic dubbed 'bump-and-rob' in which gangsters fake an accident before robbing an unsuspecting motorist.
In Kago's statement to the police, as reported by K24 TV on Wednesday, September 4, the manager left a club at midnight when his car was hit from behind.
When he alighted to inspect the extent of the damage, a man and a woman from the other vehicle reportedly brandished a gun at him before pouncing on and bundling him into the backseat of their vehicle.
They then drove him around Thika Road where they attempted to access money from one of his ATM in vain as the facility was faulty.
Kago was reportedly drugged by his abductors and only regained consciousness the next day, Saturday, August 31, at noon. He realized that the Ksh3,000, a mobile phone and Equity and StanChart ATMs he possessed were missing.
Two suspects, who were arrested on Tuesday, September 3, reportedly used his bank cards to buy electronics and furniture worth over Sh700,000.
An alarm, after the media boss went missing, was first raised by his family members on Friday night.
Kago was traced to a petrol station opposite Sankara Hotel in Westlands, where he had driven himself after regaining his consciousness.
Corroborating his story, a senior officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Office stated, "Following preliminary investigations, I think it is fair to make an inference that it was a staged accident."
Kago was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
