Camera Blunders That Led Police to Capture Colleagues in Ksh72M Heist

Twenty suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the Ksh72 Million ATM heist in Nairobi that jarred the nation last week, The Standard on Monday, September 9 reported.

Initial police reports indicated that the robbery had been planned for over 5 months, and involved police officers, G4S officers, and bank officials.

Despite the length of planning, the masterminds still made mistakes that led police on their trail, netting suspects as far as Kiambu, Kisii, and Kisumu.

The suspects reportedly disabled surveillance cameras in the G4S warehouse in Witu Road where the cash was collected for delivery and also tampered with the CCTV cameras inside the locations in a bid to mask their faces.

The robbers also tampered with CCTV cameras inside a Standard Chartered ATM lobby in a bid to disguise their faces. They, however, did not do the same for other CCTV cameras in the vicinity.

The footage from neighboring buildings captured the suspect's faces and cars that they used as they left the premises. The culprits did not know there was CCTV in neighboring buildings that have helped in cracking the case, The Standard reported.

It is also reported that on the day of the heist, there was a last-minute swap of the police officers who were supposed to escort the cash. These replacement police officers did not take the role call when they got to the G4S warehouse as was required.

The police officers were also not picked from their residences as was the norm.

At the warehouse, the names of the officers collecting the cash were not called out as was the routine. Instead, The Standard reports that they were ushered in and out in a hurry.

When the money in transit disappeared mid-way, the police started retracing the steps and pieced everything together to narrow down on the suspects.

One suspect, a police constable from Spring Valley Police Station was allegedly arrested with Ksh3 million hidden under a bed in his parent's rural home in Seka Village, Kendu Bay.

Another suspect, from Thogoto AP Camp, was reportedly arrested with Ksh4 million in a bag inside the boot of his car.
