How Ksh18,000 Connected Mystery Man to Cohen's Murder

When the visibly emotional Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti informed the country about the recovery of Cohen's body, he mentioned a second suspect who was in custody concerning the murder case in court.

The Standard on Sunday, September 15, reported that Peter Karanja, the mystery man in the murder is a professional MC and was hired at the wedding of Sarah's daughter on December 22, 2018.

This statement seemed to corroborate what had been said by Wairimu's lawyer Philip Murgor in a presser that he gave on September 14, accusing the DCI of 'suspicious' investigations.

“Sarah has a niece, who is getting married on October 18 and she had paid him Ksh18,000 deposit to book him for the event but the police have not cared or wanted to know this,” Murgor had claimed.

The Standard reported that the DCI had alleged that the money transfer to his phone might have been in connection with the murder of Cohen, whose body was discovered in a manhole on Friday, September 13.

Karanja had admitted to having known the Cohens for some time, during which he emceed the wedding of their adopted daughter, but denied having anything to do with Cohen's murder.

The former taxi driver and self-professed real estate mogul was at one time the chief campaigner for Kibaki in Gilgil when Kibaki was running for the second term.

That was where he met Gilgil MP Martha Wangari. They are reported to have been married for five years before parting ways a year ago.

The Standard reported that their split was because he had absconded his family duties, beaten her a couple of times and threatened to kill her.

“I loved this man and I have given this relationship my all. But the physical violence has gotten to a point I know I will be killed. It was better for me to walk out of the relationship than die and leave my children,” she stated in 2018.

The Standard claimed that Karanja was picked up from his home in Nakuru on Friday night, by officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit and brought to Nairobi for questioning just hours after the news of Cohen's murder jarred the nation.

He is reported to be held at Muthaiga Police Station where he recorded statements over the gruesome murder of Cohen.
