Kenyan athlete Geoffrey Kamworor, on Sunday 15, broke the world Half Marathon record with an impressive time of 58 minutes and 1 second.
Kamworor, 26, shed 17 seconds off the previous world record at the Copenhagen Half Marathon. The race is an IAAF Gold Label road race.
He shattered the previous time of 58.18 set by compatriot Abraham Kiptum in Valencia in 2018.
He has had a stellar performance on the road races bagging three world half-marathon titles. He now adds the title of the World record holder to his current accolades.
The clock ticked over to 58 minutes just before Kamworor reached the finish line and moments later his winning mark was confirmed at 58:01.
Five other men finished inside 60 minutes with Bernard Kipkorir taking second place in 59:16 from Ethiopia’s Berehanu Wendemu Tsegu (59:22) and Edwin Kiprop Kiptoo (59:27).
Ethiopia’s Birhane Dibaba Adugna, the 2018 Tokyo Marathon champion, won the women’s race in 1:05:57, taking almost two minutes off her lifetime best.
Kamworor's performance came a week after Bridgid Koskei made history in the UK after breaking Great North Run women's course record as well as the world half-marathon record after posting a time of 64 mins and 28 seconds.
The record had previously been held by her compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei, which she had clocked during the Valencia Half-marathon in 2017.
