Ekuru Aukot Speaks on Ksh250 Million Bribery Reports

Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot has slammed Murang’a County MCAs for shooting down his Punguza Mizigo Bill on September 17, 2019.

He accused the ward representatives of pocketing Ksh 100,000 to reject his proposal.

The referendum proponent went on to claim that the money was handed out at a getaway in Sagana.

Earlier on in the day, he had expressed confidence that the MCAs were on the right path, only to be surprised with the result.

“We will keep moving. Bribery won't stop us. Bribing MCAs doesn't make them right. It just speaks to the integrity issues we are seeking to correct. In this economy, Ksh 100,000 won't last them long. They'll be broke again soon,” Aukot posted on Twitter.

"Before the deadline of October 22, the state and powers that be would have spend Ksh250 million of your taxes attempting or actually bribing (as it happened in Murang'a today) the 2500 MCAs to reject the Punguza Mizigo Bill. I wonder why?" he added.

His referendum bid has put the Thirdway Alliance leader on a collision course with supporters of the Building Bridges Initiative that was a product of the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

One of Aukot’s fiercest critics has been Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who has not shied from picking a fight with him.

"Mt Kenya is speaking loudly on the dishonest Punguza Mizigo Bill and suddenly those leaders who supported it claim it was not their agenda..interesting times," Waiguru hit out at Aukot.

On September 10, she alleged that the Punguza Mizigo campaigner had been funded by suspicious individuals.

“Aukot focus on your defective Bill and stop tired sideshows. We all know who the creators and ghosts of NYS scam were; they fund & feast with you. FYI on corruption, some of us remember the COE massive financial irregularities, we read the reports you can't fool people all the time,” the Kirinyaga Governor posted on her social media.
