Armed Gang Unleashes Violence in City Schools

Four schools in Mombasa on Monday were abruptly closed after a gang went on the rampage attacking residents.

A teacher from one of the schools who sought to remain anonymous confirmed the institution he works in closed early for the day as the gang members started attacking everyone along the way.

The gang was on their way from the funeral of Abdallah Swaleh alias Vumbi at the Migombani cemetry.

Dar-ul-Ulum Girls, Peleleza Primary, Puma Primary and Puma Secondary were shut after chaos erupted when the gang armed with machetes went on a hacking spree.

They attacked people in Migombani, Bomani, Nuru, Bahari, Bofu Kiwerera and Mtaa wa Makka.

According to Daily Nation, several people were injured during the melee and were rushed to different medical facilities in Likoni.

Some of the victims had deep cuts on the heads, hands and legs.

Traders in the area were also forced to close down their business as the attackers also robbed people along the way.

Police who were sent to restore calm in the area confirmed the arrest of four individuals.

"The four are in our custody. The operation is still on. We have calmed the situation already," stated Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Benjamin Rotich.

The notorious Vumbi was gunned down by police on Sunday at around 3 pm after residents alerted police of his presence after he was seen within Mtaa wa Maka in Ushindi.

According to his family, he was shot three times, on the chest, chin and hand.

Police revealed that the suspect was in the company of five others who managed to escape but were being pursued.

Another report from the police indicated that the suspected criminals terrorising residents in the area were among 15 former inmates who were recently released from Shimo La Tewa Maximum Prison after completing their jail terms.
