Youth Attack Church Leaving Seven Injured

A group of youth attacked a congregation at ESA Mwembeni Pentecostal Church in Elburgon, Nakuru County and left seven people badly injured, the Daily Nation reported on Tuesday, September 24.

The rowdy youth attacked members of the congregation as they went on with the church service on Sunday, September 22.

The commotion forced the congregation to scamper for help as they tried to avoid the batons that were being used by the youth.

According to Pastor Jerand Ndung'u, 20 youth got into the church via a side door and started beating up a woman.

"When the woman fell down, the youth who were hanging around the compound entered inside the church and came up to where I was as they clobbered worshippers," Ndung'u narrated.

The pastor and six other members sustained injuries and were treated and discharged at Elburgon Sub-County Hospital.

Susan Wairimu, who fell down after being beaten by the young men, however, complained about chest pains after the attack.

The church was experiencing leadership wrangles as a week earlier one member of the church was attacked.

James Gitau was attacked by unknown people on his way to church revealing the rift that was between factions of the congregation.

Two factions had been fighting over leadership and ownership of the land on which the church was built.

A faction allied to Bishop George Michael Mburu, who claimed to be the presiding bishop with legal documents, blamed the other group for causing conflict.

"The window panes were shattered and fence demolished. The church has incurred losses following the damage," stated Bishop Mburu.

The matter was reported to Elburgon Police Station but no action has been caught in relation to the chaos.
