Nairobi Business Community Re-emerges & Fulfills Promise to Raila

The Nairobi Business Community of Wednesday, September 25, re-emerged fulfilling a promise made to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The group led by their Chairman Wilfred Kamau endorsed Bernard 'Imran' Okoth for Kibra MP signalling their commitment to the unity pact by the president and Raila.

The business community shot to fame in the wake of the Anti-Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) demonstrations that followed the nullified August 8, 2017, Presidential election.

"

The group had come out to openly oppose Raila after the 2017 repeat election and even tried to book Uhuru Park which the Nasa coalition had scheduled to hold the infamous oath.

At that time, Kamau confirmed that they had received permission from the county to conduct a free medical camp at Uhuru Park as long as they paid requisite fees in the region of Sh250,000.

The free medical camp would target street boys who wish to be circumcised and they would not be charged for the minor surgery'.

However, despite their efforts, the event organised by Nasa took place at Uhuru Park.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga later agreed to work together in what came to be referred to as the 'handshake'.

Months after the handshake, Raila met with Nairobi Business community to brief them on the Handshake and the Building Bridges to a New Kenyan Nation initiative that President Uhuru Kenyatta and the NASA leader envisioned.

Speaking after their meeting, Raila stated that the members of the business community had "expressed their willingness to play any role that they may be requested of them in the days ahead."

ODM released a statement stating, "They appealed to members from the other side of the political divide with whom they clashed to equally lay down arms calling on both parties to work together for the peace deal,"  the statement read in part.
