Police in Migori County arrested 10 people among them 8 pupils in connection with stealing laptops from two separate schools in the county.
Citizen Digital reported on Wednesday, October 2, that two people were arrested at Matare Primary School for stealing 13 laptops.
The two, David Mavid Matiku and Daudi Marwa are said to have stolen the laptops from the school on September 30.
Migori County Police Commander Joseph Nthege confirmed the incident saying the two suspects would be arraigned.
Seven laptops from the 13 were recovered with police conducting more investigations to retrieve the remaining 6 that were still missing.
In a similar case police arrested 8 pupils in connection with the disappearance of 23 laptops, the Daily Nation reported on Wednesday, October 2.
The pupils from Yago Primary School in Awendo, Migori County were arrested after the school reported the gadgets missing.
The laptops were part of the Ministry of Education’s initiative to improve Digital Literacy in primary schools.
Eleven gadgets were recovered in the process with Yashon Magara, an Education Director in Awendo, confirming that the police had taken the pupils into custody.
Awendo police boss Jacob Waluke affirmed that the minors will be arraigned in court for stealing government property.
“We are treating the minors like any other suspects based on the accusations and exhibits in our possession,” Waluke revealed.
It is alleged the pupils were colluding with their parents to steal the school property when they were caught.
It is however not an isolated incident as similar cases have occurred in the past putting primary schools administrators on the spot.
In 2017, The Standard reported that police had arrested 3 pupils at Lukova primary school for stealing 32 tablets. They later recovered 29 after thorough interrogations.
The gadgets are an implementation of President Uhuru Kenyatta's 2013 presidential campaign promise that was repeatedly mocked by the opposition for being unrealistic.
