Grabbers Rush to Return Stolen Land

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reported an increase in the return of stolen property in Nakuru.

The Standard reported on Thursday, October 3, that EACC had started receiving public assets that had been grabbed in the past.

EACC South Rift director Hassan Khalid recounted that former politicians, public servants and administrators were using the pseudo-amnesty opportunity given by the commission to return property that had been illegally taken from the public.

He confirmed that this was in line with the alternative dispute resolution mechanism where stolen property was being returned voluntarily.

A 400-acre parcel of land belonging to Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (Kalro) worth Sh1.2 billion was recovered in the process.

This land had been subdivided between six investors who were yet to develop it according to reports by the EACC.

The commission also recovered a title deed of land belonging to the defunct Nakuru Municipality worth Sh35 million. The land was located in Milimani Estate in Nakuru Town.

Three parcels of land in Bomet County totalling to Sh7.2 million were also returned to the commission. They had been set aside for the construction of a stadium in Sotik.

The commission also noted that the ownership of different government houses was still under investigation in Nakuru County. These include those that belonged to the veterinary department.

A 50-acre land belonging to Kenya Prisons Service and other parcels of lands in Kericho and Baringo Counties were also among those being pursued by EACC.

This comes after The Standard on Wednesday, October 2, reported that the commission had launched investigations into a foreign businessman who grabbed land belonging to Kalro in Naivasha.

The commission, through its South Rift director Hassan Khalid, had summoned the businessman two weeks before but he failed to show up.

“He seems to be avoiding detectives by saying he has other businesses outside the country,” mentioned Khalid.

The Daily Nation in March 2019 revealed that the commission had also recovered land valued at Sh780 million in Nakuru and Bomet Counties.
