Deaths Reported After Building Collapses, Several Trapped

Deaths have been reported after a two-storey building under construction collapsed at Butali market in Kakamega.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Pastor Pascaliah Williams - who runs a church in the area under the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness, confirmed that 2 people had died.

She also stated that several construction workers were believed to be still trapped beneath the rubble.

Local residents flocked the area to try the little they could to rescue those still trapped under the building.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Martin Bulimu a local correspondent, claimed that the quality of sand used during construction was being blamed for the untimely collapse.

Kakamega Deputy Governor, Philip Kutima assured the residents that the local government was in control, adding that rescue operations were underway.

Bulimu also stated that the two bodies retrieved following the tragic collapse had been ferried to government mortuary at Malaba.

Latest reports revealed that 7 people were still trapped under the collapsed building, with Pastor Williams adding that a local woman who used to prepare food for the workers was among those still buried under the rubble.
