New York Times Poaches Kenyan Journalist

Renowned International newspaper, New York Times (NYT), on Monday, October 7 announced it's the newest employee, a Kenyan journalist.

Abdi Latif Dahir, who immediately before his new job worked for Quartz Africa as the East Africa reporter, was also a Daily Nation reporter.

"We are excited to announce our first new correspondent: Abdi Latif Dahir is joining The Times in Nairobi from Quartz Africa, where he has served for three years as (an) East Africa reporter," wrote the publication.

The Nairobi-born Abdi is set to join the NYT in November, where he will undertake his new assignments.

Dahir began his career about 10 years ago where he covered business and technology for the Daily Nation.

He also wrote about the Horn of Africa region for a number of prestigious news outlets, such as Africa Review, The East African, United Press International and Al Jazeera English.

The scribe, who has vast experience, not only reported in East Africa, but Egypt and Nigeria as well.

He also covered a past United Nations General Assembly and wrote from Minnesota, about the surge of the Somali political class during the 2018 midterm elections in the United States.

Abdi, who boasts of a Master's degree is a graduate of the esteemed Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

In July 2019, The New York Times' advertisement for East Africa's bureau chief caused a stir among Kenyans. They bashed the US-based media for being interested in highlighting negative stories about the region and Africa as opposed to positive ones.

“The ideal candidate should enjoy jumping on news, be willing to cover conflict, and also be drawn to investigative stories. There is also the chance to delight our readers with unexpected stories of hope and the changing rhythms of life in a rapidly evolving region,” the advertisement read in part.
