Children to Surrender Wealth to Parents in New Bill

A man from Ugenya has drafted a bill that would require children to surrender between 10% and 20% of their wealth to their parents, Citizen Digital reported on Friday, October 11.

The bill, dubbed 'Okoa Wazazi', seeks to amend the Property Ownership Act.

Odhiambo Ogutu Randiga, 65, is lobbying his MP, David Ochieng’, to have the draft debated at the National Assembly.

In the Bill, Randiga argued that since parents were responsible for educating their children, they deserved to enjoy the fruits of their sweat.

In case of the death of the child, the draft bill instructs that the 20% would be divided between both parents as a way of giving back to them for their efforts in bringing them up.

He lamented that many parents often remain paupers when spouses of their children inherited all the wealth.

Randiga, therefore, is pushing to have the Property Ownership Act changed to allow parents to be automatically having a share of their children’s property upon their demise.

He further argued that a will was not enough due to numerous cases of contestation and the deceased failing to leave wills behind.

The man claimed that passing the bill into law was the only way of guaranteeing that parents inherit their children's wealth.
