Meet the Counter-Terrorism Expert Made UK Envoy to Kenya

Jane Marriot may not be a household name in Kenya yet but she is the woman breaking the barriers for the UK in the country.

Marriot who was chosen as the replacement for the departing high commissioner Nic Hailey became the first woman to hold such a position in the country.

All her 19 predecessors were male.

She was chosen for her experience in foreign missions as well as in line with the new UK reforms which required that all their envoys to Africa achieve a 1:1 gender balance ratio.

Apart from working in Yemen, Marriot was also the head of the UK's joint international counter-terrorism unit.

Marriott also previously served as British Deputy Ambassador to Iran, having also undertaken postings in the USA, Iraq and Afghanistan.

She has also worked domestically across many UK Government departments including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Cabinet Office, the Home Office and the Ministry of Defence.

Marriot enjoys travel, wildlife and loves reptiles having been pictured more than once with chameleons.

She is also an experienced snake handler and has been photographed with all kinds of snakes.

During her short stay since taking office, Marriot has met several senior government officials including President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP William Ruto and even DCI George Kinoti and DPP Noordin Haji.
