Police Mercilessly Beat up Students During Fiery Battle [PHOTOS & VIDEO]

Students at Pwani University on Monday, October 14, engaged anti-riot police in running battles as they went on a rampage in Kilifi county.

A video of unnamed police officers pummelling the students with batons has since gone viral across various social media platforms.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, one of the students revealed that they were up in arms over the lack of regular school trips, going on to state that he had barricaded himself within his house out of fear.

"I am stuck in my house as the police are beating up my fellow students right outside," he stated.

The public university has since been closed indefinitely over the unrest with student instructed to vacate the school premises by 6:00 P.M.

"Following the student's unrest and the subsequent damage caused to University property, the University Senate in its meeting held on October 14, decided that the University be closed indefinitely with immediate effect," read an excerpt of the school's internal memo signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M.S Rajab.

The students have called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take action against the officers captured in the video which has since gone viral.

"Hello IPOA, this is happening in Pwani University, we are waiting for your swift response," Duncan Makori posted on his Twitter page.

Pwani University's closure over the unrest, means that a total of three public universities have now been closed indefinitely over student protests, in just under a week.

Kenyatta and Moi university were closed on October 9, and October 11, respectively over student unrest.
