Kabogo Lashes At MPs Over Costly Regulations

Former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo on Tuesday, October 15, called out Members of Parliament for apparently presiding over the shortage of drugs in hospitals.

Kabogo, who labelled Kenyan legislators 'a special breed' questioned their patriotism when they were allowing fellow countrypeople to go without life-saving drugs as a result of import regulations.

According to the former governor, the regulations, which he said could only be passed in Kenya, did not make any sense.

The regulations that took effect on Tuesday, October 1, introduced stringent pre-export procedures for pharmaceutical imports, which according to importers, lengthened the shipment process.

The Kenya Pharmaceutical Distributors Association halted importation on October 2, in a bid to compel the government to lift the regulations.

The complained that the repeated laboratory tests were extremely expensive and likely to cause prices of drugs to skyrocket.

The regulations have resulted in a serious shortage and delay in the importation of crucial medicine, with the shortage of vaccines and insulin that is already being experienced putting patient lives at risk.
