Magoha Splashes Ksh3 Trillion on School Projects

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha released a report detailing how the Ministry was going to spend Ksh3 trillion in five years, KTN News reported on Wednesday, October 16.

Magoha, while launching the report, called on teachers and officials in his ministry to support it by doing their job as required.

"When we say we are launching this report, we have to be working in the field. We have to give it 80 per cent because I promise you we are currently working at 10 per cent," Magoha confirmed.

He reiterated that with this work input, would help the ministry in the advancement of education.

"We should not give false reports about school inspections because that is considered as theft," Magoha mentioned in reference to the ongoing crackdown on weak structures.

Daily Nation on Wednesday, October 16, mentioned that the report, known as National Education Sector Strategic Plan for the period 2018-2022, revealed how the government would spend the money to address several challenges facing the ministry.

"The programmes and their associated activities are projected to, cumulatively, cost Ksh3 trillion in the budget over the five-year period, with recurrent costs projected to account for about 90 per cent of the total projected cost," the report read.

The money would be predominantly used to increase school enrollment, hire more teachers and boost the quality of learning.

The report also mentioned that the government would contribute Ksh2.32 trillion of the budget, with donors covering the remaining Ksh666 billion.

The plan also noted policy priorities, programmes and strategies and covered pre-primary, primary, secondary, adult. technical and vocational education and training (TVET), university, special needs and teacher education.

"Personnel emoluments constitute the highest share and are projected to cost Ksh1.4 trillion, primary education will require Ksh104.6 billion in recurrent costs, while secondary education will cost Ksh426.3 billion. University education and TVETs take up Ksh378 billion and Ksh29.8 billion respectively," the report explained.

This placed the recurrent expenditure at Ksh2.68 trillion.
