A study released by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) released on Tuesday, October 15, ranked Kenyans as the most generous people in Africa.
Conducted across 125 countries, the research looked at how people spend their time and money on causes they care about over the last 10 years.
More than half the number of Kenyans according to the 10th World Giving Index donate money to charity.
CAF chief executive officer John Low said the study focused on the agility of people to help strangers in need, donation of money to charity and volunteering to help in an organization.
Kenya came second to Indonesia as the most improved country in terms of donations.
In the index conducted over a decade, the USA came out as the most generous country globally at 58% followed by New Zealand at 57%.
Kenya is the only country in Africa in the top 20 generous nations. Nigeria and Zambia came at positions 22 and 32 in the index.
According to the report, men are more likely to volunteer their time compared to women.
In developing countries, older people are most likely to help strangers. The report stated that that the tendency to donate heightens with age.
Kenya was also ranked the most generous country in Africa in 2018 with Daniel Mwaura, a bus conductor on the Nairobi-Gachie route cited as a generous Kenyan after he returned a passenger Ksh 30,000 forgotten in the bus in April 2018.
