Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o on Wednesday, October 16, took a leaf from Governor Mike Sonko's rulebook by effecting an abrupt change in his cabinet.
In a statement to newsrooms, Nyong'o announced the reorganisation of his county's executive committee, a move similar to his Nairobi counterpart, who on September 25, suspended 16 of his top county officials over alleged corruption.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 179 (b) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and Section 30 (d) of the County Government Act and in order to improve service delivery I have today made the following reorganization of the County Executive Committee," the statement by the Kisumu governor read in part.
A representative from the county confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that Embattled CEC member Nerry Achar was moved from the Finance docket to Energy and Industrialisation.
While serving as the Finance CECM, Achar was in August 2019, impeached by Kisumu MCAs for flouting procurement laws in the purchase of the governor's vehicle.
The Nation reported that three CECMs had been sent packing in the changes with their replacements appointed in an acting capacity, but the reasons for their removal were yet to be established. The move mirrored Sonko's surprise handling of errant members of his cabinet.
In the changes, Dickson Obungu was appointed the acting CECM in charge of Roads, Transport and Public Works with Gilchrist Okuom taking over the Business, Co-operatives and Marketing docket, and Dr. John Obiero Ogone will be in charge of the Finance and Economic Planning.
The CEC members appointed in acting roles shall continue to hold those temporary roles alongside their substantive portfolios.
"In addition, I have nominated and forwarded the name of George Omondi Okong'o to the assembly for vetting for the position of CECM in charge of Finance and Economic Planning," Nyong'o added.
The changes, he maintained were to be effected from Wednesday, October 16.
