More Nighttime in Jail for Aisha Jumwa

Rebel ODM MP Aisha Jumwa and her bodyguard Jeoffrey Okuto will spend the night of Wednesday, October 16 in detention as they await a court decision on October 17 on their bail ruling.

The two were arrested on Wednesday morning (around 3 a.m.) following the shooting incident at an ODM meeting in Ganda Ward, Kilifi that led to the death of a man.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi in a press statement on Wednesday distanced himself and the people of Kilifi whom he represents from the alleged actions of the embattled lawmaker.

Jumwa is held at a Mombasa Police Station in connection to the fracas that escalated into the death of Ngumbao Jola, the uncle to Reuben Katana, an ODM aspirant for the Ganda ward by-election.

"We condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our Ganda ward aspirant Hon Katana which was orchestrated by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa with the help of Malindi Deputy OCPD Solomon Kosgei,"  Kingi posted on his Facebook page.

Kingi hit at Jumwa, castigating her for inciting her constituents against championing for peace and cohesion as a responsible leader should.

"As leaders, it is our duty to be at the forefront in preaching peace and harmonious co-existence among our people instead of propagating hate and heinous acts like the one witnessed yesterday evening where innocent life was lost," Jumwa lamented.

The governor insisted that the people of Kilifi always co-existed peacefully with an eye on development matters until the Tuesday, October 15, night incident cast a shadow on the image of the people of Kilifi.

"I laud the Inspector General of Police and the Coast Regional Commander for acting swiftly to ensure the perpetrators of the attack are arrested on time. We will not relent until justice is served for the loss of Jola," Kingi stated, as he supported the arrest of Jumwa.

In a statement posted on his social media pages, ODM director of communications Phillip Etale said Jola died while shielding his nephew from the line of fire.

Etale further stated that Jumwa allegedly punched Magarini MP Kingi Michael Thoyah and attempted to wrestle him.

Jumwa was detained by the police on the evening of Wednesday, October 16. She will spend the night in police remand and will be arraigned in court on October 17.
