Likoni Tragedy Victims Laid to Rest in Special Grave [PHOTOS & VIDEO]

Victims of the Likoni Ferry tragedy were on Saturday, October 19 laid to rest in their home at Mung'ala Village in Makueni county.

Of special attention, however, was the fact that Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu were buried in one large grave, as disclosed by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Communications Director Jacob Elkanah.

In a video captured during the final send-off of the two who died in a tight embrace, two white caskets could be seen slowly lowered by Sonko rescue team into their final resting place.

Emotions ran high as those present sadly sang a hymn, encouraging Mariam's family and friends.

John Wambua, the bereaved husband thanked Sonko and Makueni county Governor, Kivutha Kibwana for their support in the burial plans.

"Sonko has not only helped me but the whole society. We are very appreciative and only God will reward him," expressed Wambua. 

Others present in the occasion included former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, Deputy Governor Adeline Mwau, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and MP Dan Maanzo were among others.

The bodies of the 35-year-old woman and her daughter were retrieved from the ocean 13 days after their vehicle slid from the ferry. 

CCTV footage showed that the car slid from the prow of MV Harambee into the ocean at 6:13 p.m on September 29.

On Wednesday, October 16, Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor stated that an autopsy revealed the two died of suffocation.

The autopsy, which took one and a half hours, was conducted at Jocham Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa.

In relation to the incident, President Uhuru Kenyatta revoked the appointment of all board members at Kenya Ferry Services.
