Likoni Tragedy: Sonko Makes Generous Offer to Family

  • Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday, October 17, offered a helping hand in the burial plans of the two deceased Likoni tragedy victims.

    Through his communications director Jacob Elkanah, the governor announced that he was willing to provide transportation for the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu by road, from Jocham Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa to Makueni County. 

    “We have agreed with those in charge of the burial arrangements to transport the bodies and play any other possible role in the burial arrangements,” Sonko, who plans to attend the burial stated.

    The hearse provided by Sonko will also be accompanied by a free mobile clinic van.

    Elkanah further disclosed that the governor had generously contributed to the funeral arrangements.

    Mariam's husband, John Wambua, was moved by Sonko's gesture as he mourned his family. 
     
    "Sonko has not only helped me but the whole society. We are very appreciative and only God will reward him," expressed Wambua.

    On Monday, October 30, only a day after the two drowned in the Indian Ocean, the county boss sent his rescue team to Mombasa to aid the family and friends of the victims. 

    The emergency team was deployed to aid in recovery operations at the scene of the accident which led to the untimely death of the mother and daughter.

    Makueni County Governor Kivutha Kibwana on October 12 also offered his personal contribution, in the process disclosing that the bodies would be transported to the county for burial.

    The two were retrieved on Friday, October 11, thirteen days after they drowned.
