Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday, October 30, caused a commotion after making an impromptu visit to Mbagathi Hospital.
The governor made his surprise trip to check on the progress of the ongoing renovations at the health facility. He, however, ended up listening to the various grievances of the hundreds of patients waiting to be served at the health centre.
He went on to assist some of the ailing citizens by ensuring they received treatment as well as settled a few bills on behalf of some patients.
Sonko engaged one particular citizen who claimed she was burdened by the bill she had accrued after giving birth.
The infuriated governor went on to blast one of the nurses, going on to reiterate that giving birth at any public health facility was supposed to be free.
He then shared his emergency contact numbers and urged anyone who had any grievances to share the same via Whatsapp or text messages and he would act accordingly.
"If anyone charges you any amount of money for giving birth, send the details to the number I have given you," the governor announced.
Sonko also advised the mothers gathered outside the hospital to actively practice the various forms of contraceptives to ensure they weren't burdened with raising more children than they could handle.
Earlier during the day, Sonko stamped his authority in the ongoing drama in his county.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Sonko - speaking through his communication director, Jacob Elkana, sent out a stern warning to Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who have been hatching plans to oust Speaker, Beatrice Elachi.
“It is because of selfish interests and some people choosing to be used by people who think they have a chance of controlling Nairobi in the future. It will not happen. I swear to God,” Sonko vowed.
