Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Wednesday, October 30, went off on county suppliers, whom he stated had been paid millions for supplying nothing.
In a video that has since gone viral, the governor is heard issuing threats and calling on the police to arrest and shoot him for saying that his administration will not pay rogue suppliers any more.
"There is a cartel which recorded a consent with Nairobi County during the previous administration to be paid Ksh35 million for nothing. The firm has so far been paid Sh175 million and they are now demanding for more money from the county," stated Sonko.
"Go and tell the judge (addressing the suppliers) that I have said I will not pay any money," he added.
At the same time, the Nairobi County boss noted that some police officers had ganged up with cartels to intimidate county workers who had stood up to the rogue suppliers.
“Every time these cartels come with police officers, arrest our finance staff and force them to pay more millions at the expense of taxpayers, so far they have already been paid Ksh175 million for supplying air.
"Enough is enough, we are fed up with you people, go and arrest thieves but not innocent county officers," Sonko remarked.
He added that the company had also been paid over Ksh50 million by former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's regime.
"They were paid over Ksh50 Million during the previous administration for supplying nothing, but as long as I am the Governor of Nairobi City, I will not let the cartels steal county money," he concluded.
