Kibaki's Family Issues Update on His Health

Former President Mwai Kibaki's family on Thursday, October 31, issued a statement concerning Kibaki's health.

According to a report by the Daily Nation, Kibaki's private secretary Ngari Gituku denied reports the ex-president had been admitted to hospital.

Ngari further stated that Kibaki's Monday visit to Nairobi Hospital was only a routine check-up.

“It was a normal visit and there is nothing new,” Gituku told the Nation on phone.

This came after allegations that Kibaki had been rushed to Nairobi hospital days after he returned from treatment in London.

The news publications had claimed that the 88-year-old had suffered pain in the knee that caused him to seek medical attention.

Kibaki has been battling a recurrent knee problem after sustaining an injury in a road crash in Machakos in 2002, however, Gituku could not confirm if it was the reason for the latest visit.

“At his age and stature, they can check anything (during routine medical trips), including the hair follicle, the prostrate and eyesight,” he added.

Kibaki's health update came two days after the family of retired President Daniel arap Moi on Tuesday, October 29, expressed displeasure with alarmist reports by some media outlets on the health of the former head of state.

A number of news publications reported that Moi had been readmitted at The Nairobi Hospital with 'breathing problems' that hampered his breathing.

"The family is displeased with the negative and alarmist reports being peddled by unfeeling individuals including some media outlets," Njiru stated.

"The true position is that Mzee Moi is in hospital being attended to by a professional medical team, led by his personal physician David Silverstein," Njiru added.

The family asked the media not to run alarmist stories on Moi's health and advised members of the press to wait for official announcements from the family.
