Renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge was awarded a historical Gold Album award that is the first of its kind from Nike, a multinational sportswear brand.
Announcing the news to her audience on Thursday, October 31, renowned sports journalist Caroll Radull posted on Twitter, "Congratulations to Eliud Kipchoge who has received the first-ever Gold Album award from Nike. You can listen to his audio-guided run inside the Nike Running Club app. Check the running guide tab and search for the run with Eliud."
This was the first time Nike presented such an award, and it chose to honour Kipchoge, weeks after he became the first human to run a full marathon in under two hours.
Gold records awards are mostly certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on the basis of the number of albums and singles sold through retail and other ancillary markets.
Nike packaged Kipchoge's audio-guided run, in its runner's club app to enable fans to experience Kipchoge's historical, October 12, moment.
Nike had created a bespoke version of the Nike Vaporfly trainers called AlphaFLY, which is a major innovation in the sport.
The shoes were embedded with a curved carbon-fibre plate in their thick foamy sole, which according to Nike's research gave an improved metabolic efficiency of 4%.
The award from Nike came 11 days after President Uhuru Kenyatta honoured Kipchoge with Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), which is the highest civilian recognition in the country.
"Eliud Kipchoge who is present with us has also inspired the word that no human effort is. He is the greatest of our time and our duty is to emulate his enviable level of discipline and determination in our pursuit for a better Kenya for all," the President stated.
He further reiterated that Kipchoge's latest conquest would be a reminder that Kenyans could achieve the very best as individuals and collectively as a nation.
