Matiang'i Leads Destruction of Ksh598 Million Drug Haul

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i was among top government officials who were at DCI headquarters on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, to witness the destruction of drugs.

About 100kg of cocaine, with a street value of Ksh598 million, was destroyed at the DCI Forensic Lab Incinerator, in a court procedure overseen by Milimani High Court Justice Luka Kiprotich Kimaru.

Other senior government officials who were present at the event were Police IG Hillary Mutyambai, DCI George Kinoti and DPP Noordin Haji.

The said cocaine haul was confiscated on July 29, 2016, from a container at the Port of Mombasa as it was being smuggled into the country. DCI and Anti Narcotics Unit detectives led the Investigations.

The drug haul was destroyed after the ANU obtained a court order.

When DCI reported about the disposal of the narcotics, Kenyans had doubts about the contents which were destroyed.

Blogger Robert Alai asked them to ensure that tests were done on the product before its destruction to ensure the wheat flour was not used in place of the cocaine.

On this, the DCI was quick to assure the public that the contents would be tested by officials from the government chemist.

Matiangi has been at the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking in the country.

On Monday, October 7, 2019, Matiang'i sounded a warning to prominent persons involved in drug trafficking, during a visit at Jamia Mosque in Nairobi.  He declared that the government would be very thorough in eradicating the drug menace.
