Blow to Governor Wambora as MCAs Suspend Collection of Revenue

Members of Embu County Assembly on Thursday, November 7, 2019, passed a motion that suspended the collection of revenue.

The move, according to the legislators, was necessitated by the need to force all chief officers under investigation for corruption to step aside in order to reduce the loss of public funds.

They argued that the officials should not have been allowed back to office until their names were cleared by the EACC and other relevant government agencies.

Deputy Minority Leader Newton Kariuki moved the motion, seeking the support of his counterparts to stop the county from levying any charges on traders and motorists.

He called out Governor Martin Wambora and accused him of disrespecting the house by deliberately refusing to implement its resolutions.

The Muminji Ward representative called upon the residents of Embu County to boycott payment of revenue, if two Chief Officers; Ruth Wambui Ndirangu (Finance) and Jayne Ndegi Mugambi (Gender), who were suspected by the assembly to have pilfered public funds, remained in office.

He further stated that collecting revenue and handing it over to the same individuals was illogical.

On October 31, MCAs rejected an attempt by Governor Wambora to reshuffle senior staff; reinstating the two chief officers allegedly implicated in mega graft scandals to the departments they were found culpable of embezzling funds from and called for their interdiction.

However, the governor ignored the calls by MCAs and retained the duo.

The MCAs organised a special sitting in which they invited the EACC, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji to launch investigations and charge Ruth and Ndegi over documented cases of misappropriation of public funds amounting to Ksh300 million.
