Popular Kiss FM Radio presenter Kamene Goro sparked debate and earned a fierce backlash after she posted her HIV status on social media.
On Wednesday, November 7, Kamene seized the hype that has been trending, with several people posting their status in a campaign to raise HIV awareness.
The selfie indicated that Kamene was HIV negative.
However, her action sparked a debate as her followers launched attacks on her, alleging that she would not have dared post her status if it had turned positive.
"Go for a confirmatory test. Don't be that sure," one netizen advised her.
"Keep it to yourself. An HIV test is supposed to be confidential information," Ericoh Mwangi hit back.
The reactions irked Kamene, who took to Instagram to post a video in which she ranted and launched insults at her fans.
"I must be living in one of the most highly educated ignorant society ever in the whole world. Guys, we are living in a world of HIV and AIDs. It's funny that you keep asking me if I would have posted my status was it positive.
"Someone's telling me to get a confirmatory test. What matters is someone getting tested and knowing where you stand. Knowing your responsibility is important. Don't be shallow-minded. Have you gotten yourself tested?" Kamene wondered.
While speaking with Kenyans.co.ke on phone, she further defended her action and argued that she was out to enlighten people.
"People are missing the whole point. It is the same way you would take a pregnancy test to know your pregnancy status. The rate of HIV prevalence in the country is so shocking and I am out to educate everyone to know their status. December is approaching and people should be keen on protecting themselves and enlightening others," Kamene asserted.
Kamene hosts Kiss Breakfast Show alongside Andrew Kibe.
According to a 2018 Unicef report, around 30 teenagers aged between 15 and 19 are infected with HIV and Aids each hour across the world. Two-thirds of these new infections are recorded among girls.
A report by The Standard on August 30, 2019, indicated that the United Nations had warned that despite a reduction in HIV and Aids infections over the past few decades, there is still cause for worry, particularly in Africa.
Because of the rapidly growing population in Africa, the most youthful continent, while we make progress, we are tending to stay in the same place," United Nations Population Fund Executive Director, Natalia Kanem, stated.
A report by Daily Nation in December 2009, indicated that young women would rather get Aids than fall pregnant.
