Ruto Overwhelmed by Cancer Survivor's Story

Deputy President William Ruto was overwhelmed by an emotional story of a cancer survivor when he unveiled a new training facility at the African Population and Health Research Center in Kitisuru, Nairobi.

On Monday, November 11, digital strategist Dennis Itumbi took to social media to share one Lilian Obeto's moving story.

According to Itumbi, Obeto has fought cancer twice and triumphed against it.

Obeto, who was treated at Kenyatta National Hospital, explained that the fight against cancer was effective on statistics but remained poor on actual treatment.

"She is a story of strength and faith. A testimony worth listening to. She speaks from experience and has a personal touch to her journey of triumph. When she picked the microphone today, she spoke truth to power.

"DP Ruto took notes and responded. The two then hugged and together unveiled the new training facility," Itumbi tweeted.

Ruto was impressed by her criticism of the government as he highlighted plans of tackling cancer.

"As we progressively deliberate on the interventions to make healthcare adequate and accessible to every Kenyan, research and innovation will be key actors to inform policy that would catalyse our transformation.

"We have strategically mobilised resources to stimulate advanced research, attract highly skilled researchers and encourage scientific excellence to generate independent evidence for improved economic growth," Ruto tweeted.

On Friday, July 26, Ruto disclosed that the Executive had issued directives to the Ministry of Health on managing cancer cases in the country.

Speaking during a telephone interview on Citizen TV, the DP reiterated that early screening was key to dealing with the terminal illness.
