Sonko Under Fire Over Road Blunder

Nairobi residents were up in arms on Tuesday, November 12, over a traffic gridlock in the Westlands area that lasted for several hours.

The evening protests were directed at Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his administration over the re-opening of a roundabout at The Mall area.

However, speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Nairobi County's Communications Director, Jacob Elkana, maintained that any decisions touching on roads were handled by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA).

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero had closed off the roundabout to ease traffic along the busy highway during his tenure.

"Please restore the Westlands roundabout to what it was the last few years..though untidy, this was the only Kidero success and you have ruined it..it Worked for Waiyaki way motorists," Anastacia Nduta tweeted.

Countless motorists took to social media to blast the governor, with most claiming they had been stuck on the same spot for over 2 hours.

"Westlands roundabout should remain closed forever. What is this now? 2 hours in traffic!," James Muchuku lamented on Twitter.

Some residents went as far as claiming the decision to re-open the roundabout was geared towards creating a necessity for President Uhuru Kenyatta's controversial expressway.

"The Westlands Roundabout being opened is very strategic to make you all believe that we actually need the Expressway. That roundabout was better off closed!" Yuri Bravin posted.
