Sonko's Letter to Uhuru That Cost Jubilee Legislator His Job

A letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta from Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko seems to have ruffled feathers inside the Jubilee Party.

In the letter dated Friday, November 8 and copied to Deputy President William Ruto and the party's Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, Sonko expressed frustrations in executing his duties due to wrangles in the county assembly.

He, therefore, recommended that the party sheds off some leaders so that he could work better, a request that was fulfilled on Tuesday, November 12, when Abdi Guyo got demoted as the Nairobi County majority leader.

“With the new team, I will be able to swim even in the deep end where vested interests run even deeper. With the old confrontational leadership, I was being forced to swim with my hands and legs tied. That could not have been the intent and spirit of the separation of powers.

“We must not waste time in squabbles on party leadership at the assembly, instead of delivering service that the great people of Nairobi voted me for," read the letter in part.

Sonko further noted that Guyo, who was the minority leader between 2013 and 2017 under former governor, Evans Kidero, was still facing legal issues.

“It is obvious through this case, there is a brazen display of arrogance and a sinister motive on the part of the former Majority leader to have a stranglehold on the affairs of the governance of Nairobi entirely within his sphere of influence.

"The ferocity with which Guyo and Otieno are fighting to remain in this board through a court process raises suspicion of entrenched vested interests,” he continued.

Confirm receipt of the letter to Kenyans.co.ke, however, Tuju revealed that he was out of the country but the governor's concerns were handled at their headquarters.

"I am out of the country.  But the letter was written to me and copied to both the party leader and the deputy party leader.  However, the matter has been dealt with at the party headquarters," he stated.

Guyo was replaced with Dandora area III MCA Charles Thuo Wakarindi.
