Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria on Wednesday, November 13, headed to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to assess the situation after students went on the rampage on Monday, November 11.
Kuria met with the Central Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga, Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga and JKUAT Vice-Chancellor Victoria Ngumi.
Through a Facebook post, Kuria revealed that the JKUAT Students Association President Titus Osoro and the entire team of regional and county security commanders were also present in the meeting.
The meeting was held at the university's main campus in Juja and several resolutions were made which were supposed to kick-off immediately to ensure the future security of the students.
Top of the list was that all present in the meeting agreed that security in Juja was a challenge especially in places with high a high student population such as Gachororo and blamed it on the prevalence of drugs in the area.
As a solution, the team agreed to mount a massive security operation to rid the area of crime and drugs comprehensively and with immediate effect.
Kuria and the rest of the team during the meeting also ordered that all landlords who housed students around JKUAT needed to be accredited by the university's management or face unspecified legal consequences.
The firebrand legislator also revealed that they had agreed to embark on an exercise to install security lights within the university and the surrounding areas that host the student hostels outside the university.
The university's student leadership under Clinton Osoro was tasked to sensitise the student community on how to utilise the SMS service 988 to report any cases of insecurity.
"This is an anonymous service that will be monitored in realtime by security chiefs and the university administration and it's free of charge," Moses Kuria stated.
Another resolution that came from the meeting was to improve communications between the students union and enhance peer to peer exchange and cross-university sharing of issues as Jkuat was set to host a meeting of all presidents of students' associations in all public universities on Friday, November 15, under the patronage of Education CS George Magoha.
Lastly, the meeting resolved to have the university's senate meet promptly to review the situation and deliberate on reopening the campus.
