The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed the arrest that happened after detectives swerved in action to establish the person behind the ordeal that happened to the third year University student.
“Constable Eric Mutama based at Tuuti Police Camp in Bungoma County was yesterday (22nd November 2019) arrested by DCI detectives in connection to the ghastly assault and rape of a Third Year student at Kibabii University,” a statement from the authorities.
The DCI further confirmed that investigations would continue as the suspect awaits being arraignment in court.
“The victim was headed home when she was allegedly raped and her left hand wrist severed off. The suspect remains in lawful custody as he awaits trial on 25th November 2019,” investigators informed.
The victim is a 21-year-old Bachelor of Science (Renewable Energy and Bio-Fuels Technology) student from Kirinyaga County.
An initial report by K24 TV indicated that the student was attacked together with two other comrades who managed to escape from the assailant.
The suspect reportedly wrapped his victim's arm in her brassiere and threw it on the roof of a nearby residence where the student lived at around 5 a.m.
Neighbours failed to respond to her cries for help because of fear.
Speaking to NTV on November 22, doctor David Mbati from Bungoma West Hospital informed that the student's health condition had been stabilised after blood transfusion.
“The lady came in bleeding from an area that was cut, the left upper limb completely amputated. She came in having lost a lot of blood. Her state was semi-conscious although she is able to identify herself and give some history,” confirmed doctor Mbati.
The violent act happened only a day before Kibabii University's graduation ceremony that happened November 22 and attended by University Chancellor President Uhuru Kenyatta.
