This came just days after Kipchoge was crowned the World Male Athlete of the Year in Monaco for the second year running.

The institution explained that the award was in recognition of Kipechoge’s INEOS 1:59 Challenge that saw him become the first athlete to run a marathon in under 2 hours (1:59:40).

“It’s the first time we are awarding a top sports personality an honorary degree. As a university, our niche areas are sports science and management. We want to become a centre of excellence in sport and arts as we move into the new curriculum. That’s why we settled on Eliud,” Prof Wanjiku Chiuri, the deputy Vice-Chancellor told The Standard.

Kipchoge’s other achievements in 2019 include successfully defending his London Marathon title on April 28.

On October 20, Kipchoge was the recipient of the Order of the Golden Heart, the highest state commendation for a civillian.

The award was presented to him by President Uhuru Kenyatta during Mashujaa Day celebrations at the newly-refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.
