Judge Ruins Joseph Irungu's Christmas in Fresh Ruling

Joseph Irungu alias Jowie, a prime suspect in businesswoman Monica Kimani's murder case, will spend December 25, 2019, behind bars.

Justice James Wakiaga on Thursday, November 28, directed that Irungu's bail application ruling would be heard on February 13, 2020.

Irungu has been in custody since September 2018, meaning that this is the second time he will spend Christmas locked up at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

Irungu had filed for a fresh bail application, claiming that he was suffering behind bars.

In a story covered by Daily Nation on Sunday, November 24, the suspect disclosed that he has since been held in isolation, where he is denied contact with other prisoners or even warders.

He went ahead to point out that he had been deserted by those he thought were close to him, except his family and a handful of friends.

Irungu added that visitors were only allowed to be in contact with him for exactly 10 minutes.

“At least every Tuesday, my parents come to see me. They travel from Nakuru to Kiambu every week.

"Since this is a maximum-security prison, you can imagine someone who left Nakuru at 6am to come and see you early is given only ten minutes to talk to you. And it’s strictly 10 minutes,” he narrated.

On October 30, 2018, Justice Wakiaga denied Irungu bond, on grounds that he might interfere with witnesses.

His co-accused, former news anchor Jacque Maribe, was released on a Ksh2 million bond or Ksh1 million cash bail, with three sureties.
