Matiang'i Cracks Whip After Violence at Ruto's Event

The Ministry of Interior under the leadership of CS Fred Matiang'i and his PS Karanja Kibichio has come under criticism after the latest transfer in Nyeri County.

County Commissioner David Yatich Kipkemei received a transfer letter from the ministry days after violence rocked an event attended by Deputy President William Ruto on December 8, 2019.

He was sent to Homa Bay County to serve in the same capacity and Loyyford Kibaara, who was previously in Wajir, replaced him.

"I'm here with my colleague who is taking over from me here as a county commissioner in Nyeri and I've been moved to Homa Bay as a county commissioner," Yatich announced during the hand-over ceremony.

According to KTN News, Yatich’s transfer came amidst heightened calls by political leaders.

The Standard Group-owned station claimed that the transfers were dubious and politically instigated, with Yatich having been at the helm of the county for barely nine months.

During the handover ceremony on Tuesday, December 17, Yatich downplayed the reports that the chaos had anything to do with his transfer, explaining that it was normal.

"There is nothing like I'm being transferred because there has been hooliganism in some political rallies because my office was not the initiator of the hooliganism," Yatich stated.

Additionally, he noted that no politician had the power to interfere with the coordination of the National government as it was firmly under the Interior Ministry and the CS was in charge.

Despite his defence for the transfer, the standard claimed that insider reports had it the violence between the Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke factions in the county were the major reason behind the move.

Fracas unfolded during the fundraiser in aid of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa at Giakanja High School in Nyeri town.

A group of youth started burning black T-shirts with the message 'No 2022 politics kwa bedroom ya Uhuru' before the event.

The youth was later dispersed as the officers also chased down several men and bundled them into police vans with the county's deputy speaker and Ruringu MCA Samuel Kariuki joining in the chase.
