JKIA 'Christmas Tree' Sparks Controversy

UPDATE....

Kenyans on social media have spiralled into a frenzy and some into fits of rage after a picture of what appears to be a Christmas tree that has been put up at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) surfaced online on Wednesday 18, 2019.

The tree displayed at the airport appears to be in a stand-alone field right within the field of view of the major arrivals and departures terminals.

The Chrismas tree has been adorned with decorations, as would be the norm. However, Kenyans on social media seemed far from impressed by the imagery it was creating.

However, the debate would also extend to how a Christmas tree needed to look like bringing the attention to where the tradition came from.

The Chrismas tree is mainly an evergreen spruce, conifer, or a pine tree. The tradition originated from Northern Europe when protestant Germans started bringing decorated trees into their homes during the second half of the 19th century.

While it was only a practice common in the homes of the elite, currently the Christmas tree is used to commemorate a Christian holiday that marks the birth of Christ, globally.

The conversation created by the image of the tree apparently taken at the airport seesawed between the fair commentary and downright mockery that Kenyans on Twitter are known of.

Below are a few reactions from Kenyans on social media;
